Cockroaches are one of the most capable insects to carry many disease pathogens and cause allergic reactions in people. Some common side effects from disease pathogens are food poisoning and dysentery.

One of the most common cockroaches seen in homes is the American cockroach also known as the water bug and the palmetto bug. Other groups that are similar in the adult stage are Smokey Brown and Australian cockroaches.

American cockroaches are common in commercial buildings but can be found in residential homes as well. They will generally infest areas of food storage, restaurants, and basements. They can gain access through sewer drains or be brought in with old boxes.

The German cockroach (pictured) is the most common one found in homes. German cockroaches look very similar to the Asian cockroaches although they do have key differences. One of the easiest ways to identify is German cockroaches live indoors while the Asian cockroaches live outside under debris. The Asian cockroaches can occasionally get indoors through cracks but are sighted more in kitchens and areas of food preparation.

Prevention starts with lower humidity, sanitation, free of cardboard, and trash cans be kept empty.
